Brain-boosting food to support our 'second gut' – our brain

I'd like to share a little story about my son before his recent high school entrance exam. The day before he researched what to eat to help him to focus – I was so proud of him for taking this approach to support his body and brain to help him do well in his exam. He chose a nourishing breakfast of wholegrain oats with fresh fruit and packed nuts and seeds as exam snacks.

Here's a conversation to have with your kids to boost their brains

"Think of your brain as a mobile phone. Just like apps need updates and the battery needs to be charged, our brains need nourishment and rest. This is how our brain updates and recharges."

Here's are some tips to boost brains!

Fuelling up for success

Kids' food and drinks impact their well-being and learning, either empowering and energising or draining and stressing them.

Food has the power to fuel our brains and impact performance

Choose brain-boosting foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and proteins to enhance memory and concentration. Avoid processed foods that can hinder memory and mood and have a negative effect on performance.

It's common for kids to resist the foods that are most beneficial for them.

Educating kids on looking after their brain can make a positive impact.

5 brain care tips

  1. Keep hydrated: Your brain functions best when 'watered'
  2. Prioritise sleep: A well-rested brain is essential for clear thinking!
  3. Kickstart your day: a nourishing breakfast - combining whole grains with some protein like eggs is a winning breakfast combo!
  4. Brain-boosting goodies: Omega3s, protein, berries, avocados, and dark chocolate are like superfoods for your memory and focus!
  5. Snack smart: Opt for light, energising snacks to steer clear of 'brain drain'!
