Plan your road trip snacks for happy kids
If you're heading on a road trip this school holidays here are some ideas to help you make choices from the limited options available.
Don't get me wrong, I'm totally up for a relaxed approach to food and drinks during the school holidays, after all it's what we eat 'most' of the time that really counts. We do however not want to be over doing the high fat, high salt, high sugar options as this can potentially lead to cranky children for us to manage...
Here are my tips for food and snacks on the road
You'll likely find yourself at a drive through or navigating a food court at some point.
I'm not here to tell you what to order...these are just a few helpful suggestions and tips to consider.
- Plan your road trip stops in advance, make your own lunch and pack plenty of snacks for the kids
- Avoid sugary, high-calorie drinks that lack nutrients to minimise energy spikes and numerous toilet stops too!
1. Guzman and Gomez - my top choice
They have some good options available and you can swap out the white rice for brown rice, plus the burritos have beans, and lots of veggies.
2. Maccas - beware of 'super-size' deals and resist 'add ons'.
Choose chicken salad or grilled chicken with balsamic dressing. Even the simple ham and tomato wholemeal toasted sandwich can be a good option.
3. Subway - avoid creamy dressings and foot long subs
Choose a 6-inch sub on wholegrain bread with lots of veggies and avocado. Again maybe resist the extra cookies...
4. KFC - so many fried options - this is my least favourite choice
Go for the Shaker salad with grilled chicken with dressing on the side. Some people absolutely have a hankering for KFC and if that's you then enjoy it and maybe stop by an alternative on the way home |
Why not stock your freezer ahead of school going back.
Bake some homemade cookies or muffins or try out these lunchbox scrolls. They're a great lunchbox finger food and also convenient to pack for road trips. You get to choose the flavour of your dough, plus what fillings you put in them from the options provided. Using wholegrain flour, to make a simple dough with added veggies these are a good nutrition boost and will keep tummies fuller for longer.
