Feeling Tired All the Time? It Might Not Be “Normal”

How Eating Well Transforms How You Feel.

How did those first few days back at school go? Are you feeling exhausted already?

I wanted to share something a bit more personal this week — why I do this work.

Because I see the same thing over and over again.

Parents (especially mums) just pushing through…busy, overwhelmed, and completely used to feeling flat.

We’ve almost accepted that this is just “how life is”.
Feeling tired.
Running on empty.
Snappy by dinner time.

But here’s the truth: Just because it’s common, doesn’t mean it’s normal.

The moment that got me thinking

I was recently listening to a podcast with Prof Tim Spector and Dr Federica Amati on boosting energy and reducing fatigue, and this line really stuck with me:

“Convenience isn’t everything… even though that meal only took four minutes, it doesn’t mean it’s going to do you any good.”

And I thought — this is exactly what I see every day.

We’ve been sold convenience as the solution. Quick meals. Grab-and-go snacks. Foods that save time.

But often? They’re the very things leaving us feeling tired, sluggish and irritable.

When we rely on highly processed, quick options — or focus on eating less instead of eating well — we end up undernourished and running on empty.

Why eating well actually gets easier (not harder)

Here’s the part I find fascinating — and honestly, a bit magical.

When you start eating more whole, plant-based foods…your body actually starts to want more of them.

This comes down to your gut microbiome.

Your gut is home to trillions of microbes, and they thrive on fibre-rich foods like:

  • vegetables

  • fruit

  • legumes

  • nuts and seeds

  • wholegrains

As these microbes grow, they begin to influence your cravings. So instead of constantly battling willpower…you start to naturally lean towards the foods that help you feel good.

It becomes less about discipline and more about:

“This is how I want to feel.”

And once you feel that shift — more energy, better mood, clearer thinking — you don’t really want to go back.

5 simple shifts to boost your energy (without overhauling everything)

This isn’t about perfection or restriction. It’s about small, realistic changes that add up.

1. Build real meals (not just snacks on repeat)
Aim for meals that include protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats to keep your energy steady throughout the day.

2. Add before you take away
Instead of cutting foods out, start by adding more of what your body needs — vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds and wholefoods.

3. Eat something in the morning
Even something simple can help stabilise energy and prevent that mid-morning crash.

4. Upgrade your “quick options”
Keep easy, nourishing meals on hand like eggs on toast, smoothies, yoghurt bowls or leftovers.

5. Drink more water than you think you need
Fatigue is often dehydration in disguise — especially when you’re busy.

Why this matters

So many of us are eating on the run, grabbing whatever’s easiest, and just getting through the day. But it’s not making us feel good.

And we don’t have to accept that as our “normal”. When you start to nourish your body properly, something shifts:

  • Your energy lifts

  • Your mood steadies

  • You feel more like yourself again

You don’t need to do it all at once

Start small. Pick one change. Notice how you feel. Let that feeling guide you.

Because when you feel better…you’ll want to keep going.

And that’s what this is really about.
